Introduction
A new ocean is formation in Africa due to the gradual splitting of the continent along the East Africa Rift.
CAUSE OF THE RIFT FORMATION.
1. TECTONIC PLATE MOVEMENT: The Africa plate is splitting into two smaller plate
The Nubian plate ( Western side)
The Somali plate ( Eastern side)
These plate are moving away from each other , creating large cracks in the earth crust.
2.ROLE OF THE EAST AFRICAN RIFT: This rift extends over 3,000 KM fron Ethiopia to Mozambique.
It marked by the deep valley , volcanic activity, and earthquakes showing signs of the earth crust breaking apart.
3.GEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF THE RIFT EXPANSION: The 2005 Dabbahu earthquake in Ethiopia
A 60 Km-long crack opened in just a few days .
Active valconies plate like the Afar triangle in Ethiopia
FUTURE OF IMPLICATIONS
A new ocean basin: If the rifting continues, seawater from the Indian ocean will eventually flood the low-lying areas forming a new Ocean.
Separation of East Africa: Countries like Ethiopia,Kenay , Tanzania and Mozambique could becone an isolated landmass , similar to Madagascar's today.
Impact on Human Settlement: Infrastructure, Agriculture and Communities in affected regions may face challenges due to earthquake and shifting landscapes
Conclusion
The formation of a new ocean in Africa is a slow but inevitable geogical process. While it may take million of years, the ongoing tectonics in East Africa
Rift is a clear sign that the continent undergoing a major transformation.
