The End of ISS

The International Space Station (ISS) is expected to end its operations around 2023 and NASA plans to crash it into the Pacific Ocean:

End of operations: The ISS will be replaced by a new space station, and NASA plans to transition to commercially-owned and -operated destinations in low Earth orbit.
  • Reentry: The ISS will reenter Earth's atmosphere, burning up and breaking into pieces before crashing into the ocean. The reentry is expected to last about 40 minutes.
    • Safety: Access to the Pacific Ocean will be restricted during reentry to avoid casualties.
      • Spectacle: The reentry is expected to be a spectacular event, and NASA may fly cameras and sensors to document it.
      • Science: There will be scientific value in documenting the reentry.

      • Since its first modules launched at the end of 1998, the International Space Station has been orbiting 250 miles above Earth. But at the end of 2023, NASA PLANS TO CRASH THE ISS into the ocean after it is replaced with a new Space Station, a reminder that nothing within Earth's orbit can stay in space forever.
